OVERTIME PAY
Without question, one of the biggest complaints workers have with Delta Airlines is how overtime pay is handled. You can go to 20 different cities (if we still had that many) and find that many different ways of calling out overtime. Doesn’t it sometimes seem that the same people are constantly receiving all the overtime? Well, they probably are.
Without strongly established work rules and managers willing to implement them, there isn’t a lot that can be done about rectifying abuses. Each city generally has a plan of how they call out overtime, but many supervisors rarely ever stick to the plan. You see, they really don’t have to because there are no ramifications if they don’t.
One of the many benefits of having a union on site is that there are contractually agreed upon work rules that must be adhered to.
At United Airlines under IAM, one of the methods utilized to make overtime fair is called, “overtime by accumulation.” When overtime is called, people with the least amount of accumulated overtime are always called first, whether they would be receiving straight time, time and a half or double time. If by chance, a supervisor makes a mistake and bypasses someone, they simply point it out to management and by contractual agreement, both receive the overtime pay.
To help ensure a more fair and equitable workplace, please fill out a union card today. The Federal Government guarantees the secrecy of union cards and the company will never know who has or has not signed cards.
