PROFIT SHARING OPRAH STYLE
YOU GET A CAR…AND YOU GET A CAR…AND YOU GET A…
CAR PAYMENT!?!
Recently, Ed Bastian, our newly named President and CFO, proclaimed in loud terms our third quarter pre-tax profits. He was proud — and rightly so — to announce to the world that we had made $363 million dollars for Delta Air Lines, which is a record 3rd quarter amount for our carrier.
He wanted all employees to know that so far this year Delta had set aside $160 million dollars for profit sharing. What is hidden in his remarks is that contractually, most of that money is guaranteed to go to the 6,600 pilots, not the rest of us.
There are approximately 48,000 employees working for Delta Air Lines. The pilots have a contract that guarantees them 15% of all pre-tax profits up to 1.5 billion dollars, and 20% of profits above 1.5 billion. Those 6,600 pilots get their money off the top, the rest of us get what’s left…maybe.
So far this year we have made Delta $600 million in pre-tax income. The pilots are guaranteed $90 million of that. The rest of us get the table scraps…maybe. The pilots group (the 6,600 with a guaranteed contract) gets $90 million. The rest of us 42,000 get to fight over $70 million. Apparently having a union contract pays dividends.
We deserve better. Sign your IAM card and send it in today.
