Delta – Northwest
And
Our Future
Have you seen the special message to Northwest employees from Crystal Knotek, Senior Vice President of Customer Service? She was very helpful with the question and answer packet she distributed. Under the NWA LABOR IMPACTS section there is a question that should help us all decide our Union future at Delta – Northwest.
26. What happens to NWA’s collective bargaining agreements?
They will remain in place and be assumed by Delta pending conclusion of the representation elections. In the event that a NWA union wins the representation election, Northwest’s CBAs will continue to remain in place until a new combined CBA is negotiated.
In the event that the union does not win the representation election, pay and benefits will be managed by Delta’s policies and procedures.
Essentially, this means that employees who are covered by a collective bargaining agreement (contract) will continue to receive the superior vacation, health insurance, sick and injury benefits, pension contributions, overtime pay and rules, bidding and bumping rights, and more even though their counterparts from Delta will not.
These will all stay in place until each and every one of us decides in a vote to either keep these benefits and improve them by bargaining a combined CBA that covers all of us, or until we vote to throw them all in the trash can by voting out the union.
Here’s a question the company will not ask and answer:
What is the goal in bargaining a combined collective bargaining agreement?
The goal in combining two work groups in a legally binding Union contract is to bring the best of both worlds together. Where one group enjoys more of one thing and the other enjoys more of another, the strategy of a combined agreement is to have all of that for everyone in the agreement. This document becomes the basis for combining seniority that can be enforced in a court of law. This is also the place where we take the promises of management such as no hub closures, future pay raises and frontline employee protections, and put them in writing.
You see, the Future is In Your Hands – literally! By filling out the IAM card and turning it in, you will change the course of your future for the better.
